The symposium aims to discuss the theoretical and methodological contributions originating in Latin American academic centers to the sociological understanding of religious phenomena. In the European and North American literature, the production of Latin American social scientists is often limited to the provision of ethnographic data while their theoretical accomplishments are relegated to “Latin-American perspectives” on religious phenomena. The panel attempts to discern the possibilities and difficulties found by Latin American scholars while studying religious phenomena, creating horizontal links amongst themselves and communicating their findings within and outside the continent. Empirical, theoretical and methodological contributions to the study of religion originating in both studies authored by scholars of different national origins within the sub- continent and academic works comparing religious phenomena across Latin American countries will be discussed.

Cette session thématique se propose d’analyser les contributions théorico-méthodologiques de centres académiques d’Amérique Latine à la compréhension des phénomènes religieux. Dans la littérature européenne et nord-américaine, la production des chercheurs en sciences sociales latino-américains est perçue comme se résumant à fournir des données empiriques et ethnographiques et leurs propositions théoriques sont réduites aux “visions latino-américaines” des phénomènes religieux. Nous chercherons à analyser les possibilités et les difficultés rencontrées par les chercheurs latino-américains tant dans l’étude du phénomène religieux que dans la création de liens horizontaux entre eux, et également dans la diffusion de leur production à l’intérieur et à l’extérieur du continent. Des contributions empiriques, théoriques et méthodologiques à l’étude de la religion – aussi bien fruit de nombreuses recherches d’auteurs de nationalités distinctes au sein du continent latino-américain que de travaux qui comparent le phénomène religieux à travers les pays d’Amérique Latine – seront discutés.

If your paper is accepted, it will appear in the next ISSR Network (December 2008) and the abstract and the summary will be put on its web site: www.sisr.org .

The ISSR expects more than 300 papers: the general secretariat cannot check these texts. Please have your abstract and the summary checked by a native speaker before you send it in.

GUIDELINES FOR TYPING UP YOUR PROPOSED PAPER (**)

Send to the Conveners of the STS

your proposal in an attachment

USE ONLY STANDARD TIMES NEW ROMAN FONT IN 12PT and bold when asked, see below

Give the follow information in the set order:

Specify the session for which you send in a proposal:

– for a Thematic Session or a Working Group: give its STS or WGT number and the title of the session at the top of your abstract

-for a New Researchers’ Forum: give the NRF number of the STS and the title of the session or put NRF-MPL at the top of your abstract

– for a Miscellaneous Paper: put MPL at the top of your abstract

Write then the title of your proposed paper in bold in the two official languages of the ISSR SISR – If your presentation will be in Spanish put the title in Spanish before the English and French translation. (¨¨)

Next give the Family Name and First Name of the author(s) in bold, followed, but not in bold, by the institutional affiliation

Then give the e-mail address of the author. If there is more than one author; give the e-mail address of the principal author with whom the Convener(s) or the General Secretary should correspond if needed

The abstract should follow in the language that will be used during the presentation at the conference (200 words maximum) (**)

Finally, a shorter summary of your abstract (100 words maximum) in the second official language of the ISSR-conferences should be typed in italics. If English is used in the presentation, then the translation should be in French (and vice versa) (**)

If your proposal does not fit the model set it can not be put on the web site and will be returned to you by the Convener or the General Secretary for adaptation by yourself to the model set.

THE SPANISH LANGUAGE AT THE CONFERENCE

DECISIONS TAKEN BY THE COUNCIL CONCERNING THE USE OF THE SPANISH LANGUAGE AT THE CONFERENCE:

1- There will be a simultaneous translation in Spanish paid by the Local Committee at the Opening session and the two Plenary sessions. The text of the speakers in the plenary sessions will be projected by power point and scrolled down.

2- The Spanish language may be used in some Thematic Sessions, but we should avoid exclusive Spanish sessions. Indeed, this would not promote interaction with other language groups. Papers presented in Spanish should be accompanied with an English and a French text – at least an extensive summary – projected on a screen and scrolled down during the presentation.

TYPING UP YOUR PROPOSED PAPER IN SPANISH

Please follow the rules specified on the-previous page, except as far as the abstracts are concerned

The abstract should be in the language that will be used during the presentation at the conference (200 words maximum), i.e. in Spanish

A shorter summary of your abstract (100 words maximum) in French and English should be added in italics, so that the conveners can evaluate your proposal, if they do not read Spanish, and the participants can understand the topic of your paper when the abstract is on the Web.

To promote the scientific exchanges at our conference, we ask

AUTHORS PRESENTING A PAPER

in one of the languages of the ISSR conferences (English or French) to bring, if at all possible, an extensive summary in the other language of the ISSR which may be scrolled down by power point,. This would make it easier for participants who are not fluent enough in the language of the speaker to follow her/his arguments. All conference rooms will be equipped with power point.

A participant at the conference can only propose one paper. Furthermore, in order to present a paper at the conference one must be or must become a member of the ISSR. In order to do so, please check www.sisr.org : membership, how to join.
